2D Landscape Design
2D Residential landscape design is about creating an outdoor space built specifically around your home, your property, and how your family actually uses it. Landscape Design Services, LLC works with homeowners throughout southern Utah, from front-yard curb appeal projects to full backyard renovations, producing plans that are both visually distinctive and genuinely buildable. Many of our residential clients own upscale or custom-built homes and understand that a professionally designed landscape is an investment that highlights the architecture of the home and holds up over time, not just seasonal decoration.
What's Included in a Residential 2D Design
A residential landscape plan typically addresses front yard curb appeal, backyard outdoor living areas, and the exact placement of hardscape features such as patios, walkways, fire pits, and retaining walls, all drawn to scale, most commonly at 1/8" scale, with the dimensions needed to estimate and build the project. Plant selection is chosen specifically for southern Utah's climate and soil, factoring in sun exposure and water use, since a beautiful plan that doesn't survive the local growing season isn't a functional one. We also design around the architectural features of your home itself, using plant placement and hardscape lines to draw attention to what makes your property stand out. As with all our plans, designs are considered conceptual until real-world measurements are verified on-site.
How Our 2D Design Process Works
We start with a free phone consult to understand how you actually want to use your outdoor space, whether that's entertaining, privacy, gardening, or simply improving curb appeal. Next, we gather photos, measurements, and any plot plans you have, and for Cedar City and St. George homeowners, we're glad to meet in person to take those measurements directly. A custom scaled draft is then created in 2D, 3D, or sketch form, and we review it together to make revisions until the plan reflects your taste, space, goals, and budget. Once finalized, your plan is delivered by email and secure link, with paper copies available on request, and we're happy to refer trusted local contractors for installation if you need one
Start With a Free Initial Consultation
The first step is a phone conversation about your property and your project. We discuss what you are hoping to accomplish, the current condition of the landscape, the features you want to include, your general style preferences, and how you plan to use the finished space.
Contractors can also use this conversation to explain the client's goals, project scope, sales requirements, and the type of plan or presentation their company needs.
Gather Photos, Measurements, and Property Information
We identify the information needed to create an accurate design. Remote clients may provide photographs, measurements, plot plans, aerial imagery, or other property information. Southern Utah clients who choose an in-person service can have the necessary site information gathered during a site visit.
Important information may include property dimensions, building locations, existing landscape elements, elevations or slopes, access points, existing vegetation, views, sun and shade conditions, and the location of features that need to remain.
Site inventory is an important part of professional landscape planning because existing conditions influence everything from plant placement to the location and function of activity areas.
Develop the Draft Design
Our designers use the information gathered during the consultation and site information process to create the initial design.
The draft establishes the major layout first, including how the different outdoor spaces will be organized. Planting areas, hardscape, circulation, outdoor living spaces, landscape features, and other requested elements are then developed into the design.
The level of detail depends on the service selected. A concept sketch may provide a quick visual direction, while a 2D design provides a scaled plan.
Review the Design and Make Adjustments
The first draft is not simply sent out without discussion. We review the design with the homeowner or contractor and identify changes that need to be made.
This is where the plan can be adjusted to better match the client's preferences, property, budget, materials, desired features, and practical requirements. The collaborative review process helps turn the initial concept into a design that is specific to the project.
Complete the Final Landscape Plan
Once the design direction has been approved, we complete the final plan and supporting visual materials appropriate to the project.
A final 2D plan can provide labeled layouts, dimensions, materials, quantities, and other information needed to communicate the design to the installation team.
Digital files are delivered electronically so they can be shared with contractors and project partners. Paper copies can also be provided when requested.
Contractor Referral and Design Support
Homeowners who need help finding an installer can ask us about contractor referrals in the areas we serve. Our goal is to connect clients with trusted landscape professionals who can take the completed design and move the project into installation.
We can also remain available for design questions and coordination as the project moves from the plan to the actual landscape.

Founder Greg Berg has spent more than 33 years in the landscape industry, working with homeowners across the country to design landscapes that actually reflect how they live. That experience shapes every residential project we take on, from a simple front-yard refresh to a full property renovation for a custom home.
Serving Cedar City, St. George & Beyond
We offer full in-person residential design services in Cedar City and St. George, UT, as well as Salt Lake City, UT. Homeowners outside these areas, anywhere in the country, can still work with us through our remote design process, which uses the photos and property information you provide to produce the same quality scaled plan.
Why Homeowners Choose Landscape Design Services, LLC
Homeowners work with us because getting the design right is our only job, and that focus shows in the level of detail in every plan we produce. A well-designed landscape is one of the few home investments that improves both the daily enjoyment of a property and its long-term value, which is why plant selection, layout, and architectural alignment get real attention rather than being treated as an afterthought. Our local relationships with trusted Cedar City and St. George contractors mean your plan won't just look good on paper, it will be realistic to build.
